8 Ways to Prepare for a Smoother Move
1. De-clutter your home
Ask yourself these 3 questions- Do I love it? Do I use it? Do I need it? If you can’t answer “yes†to at least two of those questions , then you should sell, toss or donate the item.
2. Consider storage
If you’re selling – start packing even before you list your home. Store some of your stuff in a storage unit or Pod. Pack away & stash out of season decor & clothing. Store away extra furniture, chairs & small appliances that aren’t used often like that pasta maker!
3. Pare your pantry
Try & use up all your non-perishable & frozen items before your move. Many of these items don’t travel well. Before moving, buy only what you need and will consume.
4. Label, Label, Label
Label each box with contents as well as the room where it’s supposed to go in your new place. You can pre-print lables on your computer weeks beforehand to prepare. For boxes packed with items you’ll need as soon as you arrive at your new home, write “Open First†on them, professional organizer Allison Flinn of Raleigh, NC said. Those must-have items include tooth brushes, toilet paper, soap & towels.
Color-coded labels also can come in handy to identify your belongings by room; i.e, blue kitchen, pink for girls room, blue for boys room etc.
5. Remove distractions
Make arrangements for kids and pets to be away from your home on moving day. No kids = no extra headaches on the big day!
6. Transfer or disconnect utilities
This can be done weeks before – don’t for get to schedule any service guys to come the day after your move – internet service provider, cable guy etc.
7. Purchase moving insurance
If your moving company offers extra or more insurance coverage for a small fee buy it. It’s worth a couple hundred bucks to have expensive items insured like TV’s dining room furniture, etc. just in case something is broken in the move, then you are covered!
