4 things to know about Woodlawn Middle School

Friday, 02 Aug 2019 at 10:26 am

Woodlawn is one of two middle schools in District 96. Located at 6362 Gilmer Rd, Long Grove, IL 60047, the student body is a mix of Buffalo Grove, Prairie View, and Long Grove residents.

As part of an ongoing series here on the blog, I want to share a few quick facts about each school + a bonus local food recommendation. For more detailed information, you can check out Woodlawn's main website here.

616

Number of students reported in the 2018 - 2019.

Great Culture

Who better to talk about the culture than Woodlawn's very own, Principal Greg Grana! Principal Grana generously contributed this post for an earlier spot on the blog.

My favorite quote from the article:

"Our students are valued in the classroom and there is a premium placed on our different background and beliefs. Woodlawn is a community, family and place where students feel safe and appreciated. In fact, our culture and educational system has been given prestigious, national and international awards. Schools from around the United States and the world have visited Woodlawn and District 96 to see how we operate in person.  I may be biased, but having been the Woodlawn principal for the last thirteen years, I can honestly say that no school matches the culture of Woodlawn."

2018 Recipient of the DuFour award

In 2018, Woodlawn received the annual DuFour award. "This national award honoring the memory and work of Dr. Richard DuFour to help every student succeed is without precedent in School District 96. It's the third time the award has been presented and Woodlawn is the first middle school to receive it. Qualified applicants included schools across the United States, Canada, and Australia who met the rigorous standards of being recognized on AllThingsPLC."

More information on the award, read the full article here.

Blue Ribbon Recipient

Woodlawn has received a National Blue Ribbon honor and was named an Apple Distinguished school in 2015.

3 things to know about Prairie Elementary School

Prairie is one of four elementary schools in District 96. Located at 1530 Brandywyn Lane in Buffalo Grove, the student body is a mix of Buffalo Grove, Prairie View, and Long Grove residents.

As part of an ongoing series here on the blog, I want to share three quick facts about each elementary school + a bonus local food recommendation. For more detailed information, you can check out Prairie's main website here.

412

Number of students reported in the 2018 - 2019.

Blue Ribbon Recipient

In 2017, Prairie Elementary School was recognized by the United States Department of Education as one of 219 public schools to receive the National Blue Ribbon Awards.

The U.S. Secretary of Education, Betsy Devos, noted this about the selected schools:

"National Blue Ribbon Schools are active demonstrations of preparing every child for a bright future. You are visionaries, innovators and leaders. You have much to teach us: some of you personalize student learning, others engage parents and communities in the work and life of your local schools and still others develop strong and forward-thinking leaders from among your teaching staff."

After School Clubs

Prairie has a ton of variety here to choose from for after school clubs. Check out the full list here that includes a wide mix of things like Writing Club, After-School Rollerskating, and Rhythm Band Club.

Great Chicken Dinner

Looking for an absolute feast of grilled chicken and phenomenal side dishes?  And if you like spice, this is the place for you! I usually order the family platter and get a side of the cassava fries. Check out Porto's Peri Peri in Buffalo Grove!

Woodlawn Middle School Culture

Friday, 17 May 2019 at 11:12 am

Featured on the blog today is Woodlawn Middle School's principal, Greg Grana!  Here is what he has to say about the culture at Woodlawn.

"Culture. Simply put, culture is what drives the excellence that is Woodlawn Middle School.

High achieving?  Absolutely!

Woodlawn values the daily interactions between all stakeholders, ensuring our success as a school.  This collaboration is seen throughout Woodlawn as our teachers plan together, students are working together, instructional coaches guide and mentor our staff to give our students the best classroom experience possible.  In day interventions and after school assistance are also an option to help any student that needs a boost or wants to be challenged at a higher level.

Extra curricular opportunities?  You betcha!

Our Woodlawn students have the opportunity to participate in many sports, clubs and activities after school. Each day our students can be seen during our activity period participating in cooking club, open art studio, math club, and sewing just to name a few. Activities such as math club, yearbook and Spanish club and student council are always filled with students. Our track team has 220 students on it and our boys and girls experience sports such as basketball, volleyball and cross country.

Is culture really that important? No doubt!
Our students are valued in the classroom and there is a premium placed on our different background and beliefs.

Sincerely,
Greg Grana
