Chocolate Fest in Long Grove starts May 17th

Monday, 13 May 2019 at 08:08 pm

Chocolate Fest in Historic Downtown Long Grove - 308 Old McHenry Road, Long Grove, IL 60047

Chocolate Fest is one of my family's favorite events to attend every year! It is the first big festival that Long Grove hosts annually and it brings visitors from near and far. There is something to do for all ages and is a great family event. It kicks off this weekend on Friday, May 17th and runs until May 19th. Chocolate Fest is for chocolate lovers of all ages and the price of admission is just $5 per person and children under 12 receive free admission.

Rest assured your sweet tooth will be satisfied! Famous Long Grove Confectionery will be serving frozen hot chocolate, chocolate dipped strawberries (my personal favorite), and mighty chocolate donuts. Local merchants and other vendors will be offering everything from chocolate goodies and beverages to BBQ, so make sure to come with an appetite!

Children and adults who are still big kids at heart can enjoy the carnival rides and the activities in Towner Green. If you are feeling competitive, enter the hot dog or pie eating contests! Also make sure to check out all of the live performances that will be happening throughout the festival. Favorite bands that will be performing are Sixteen Candles and 7th Heaven.

For more information on: hours, admission, offerings, parking and shuttle service please visit  http://longgrove.org/festivals/chocolate-fest/

Five Elite Programs at Stevenson High School

Friday, 10 May 2019 at 02:05 pm

A lot of high schools will only have one, maybe two things they are well known for. You'll look at a school and say, "Oh, they have a great football team" or, "Oh, they have a really good math program."

What's incredibly rare, though, is a place like Adlai E. Stevenson High School which is known for a dozen different elite programs, both in and outside of the classroom. At Stevenson, state championship banners aren't a once every other decade type of occurrence. There are years (like 2017) when five different teams took home state titles.

So, whether your kids are into football or water polo; math and science or arts and debate, there are plenty of great options to choose from. Today I wanted to highlight five of Stevenson High School's top programs.

Top STEM school

The STEM pathway is a "program designed to increase access to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) career options." Within this program, there is a certification called "AP + Project Lead the Way" which is awarded all around the country.

In 2017, 3,000 high school students in America graduated with this honor. Which individual high school had the most students receive this certification? You guessed it: Stevenson High School.

According to Niche.com's 2019 list of Best Schools for STEM in Illinois, Adlai E. Stevenson ranked at No. 5. Stevenson showed up No. 64 in the 2019 national rankings and No. 1 in Lake County.

Art Program Named Best in State

Does this emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics mean the high school tosses arts to the side? Not the case at Stevenson.

Stevenson's Visual Arts Department was named the 2018 Best School Art Program in Illinois by the Illinois Art Education Association.

Athletics

Here are a few of the recent state championship teams:

Football - 2015

Boys Basketball - 2015

Girls Badminton - 2017, 2018

Boys Gymnastics - 2015

Girls Water Polo - 2015, 2017, 2018

Boys Bowling - 2016

Boys Water Polo - 2017

Patriettes - 2017

Journalism / School Newspaper

In 2018, the Stevenson High School school newspaper (Statesman) won the first-place ranking from the American Scholastic Press Association. This was their fourth year in a row achieving this honor.

The paper also took home the 2017-18 "Best Print Publication" honor from the Illinois Journalism Educators Association.

Scholastic Bowl

Is your son/daughter interested in chess, debate, or a big fan of trivia? Stevenson High School has solid options here as well. Chess Club won state in 2008 and hasn't finished outside of the Illinois Top 5 since 2006. Debate Team was Harvard National Champions in 2011 and the Scholastic Bowl (aka Quiz Bowl) team won a state championship in 2018.

You can read more about the different Adlai E. Stevenson programs on their main website or follow the high school on Facebook.

U.S. News Releases 2019 list of Best High Schools: Adlai E. Stevenson Ranks Near the Top

Friday, 10 May 2019 at 12:29 pm

Every year, US News puts together a list of the best high schools in America. The publication looks at over 17,000 schools and evaluates them on "college readiness, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rates."

The 2019 list is officially out and, once again, Adlai E. Stevenson High School finds itself right at the very top of the list. Stevenson has now been recognized in the Top 200 on U.S. News' list every year since 2003.

In Illinois, Stevenson ranks No. 6 overall and is the highest-ranked open-enrollment high school in the state behind five selective-enrollment institutions in Chicago.

  1. Payton College Preparatory School
  2. Northside College Preparatory School
  3. Lane Technical High School
  4. Young Magnet High School
  5. Jones College Prep High School
  6. Adlai E. Stevenson High School
  7. Proviso Math and Science Academy
  8. Brooks College Prep Academy High School
  9. Phoenix Military Academy High School
  10. Libertyville High School

Equally impressive is Stevenson's spot as the Number 155th school in the national rankings. Think about that, 155th out of 17,000. Literally part of the 99th percentile!

Stevenson also is ranked No. 71 nationally in the U.S. News STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) rankings, which is based primarily on participation levels and success on Advanced Placement science and mathematics exams.

Over the next few weeks, I'll be showcasing more about Stevenson High School here on the blog. Look for a new post on the site every Monday and Friday and, if you'd like to subscribe to my monthly newsletter or hear about listings in the area, just send me an email at florence@atproperties.com
