Brighton Park’s destiny has always been closely tied to transportation.

In the early days, horse-drawn streetcars and later electric railways attracted factories and their workers to the Southwest Side neighborhood.

As the railways expanded, so did the neighborhood, which provided convenient and affordable housing in the early part of the 20th century.

Today the neighborhood includes a mix of residential, commercial, industrial buildings as well as transportation.

Residents are attracted to its affordable housing and easy access to transportation, including the Stevenson Expressway, Interstate 55 as well as public transportation including the CTA’s rapid transit Orange Line to Midway International Airport.

Residents enjoy the growing yet peaceful community. Homes are mostly single-family with yards, bungalows, ranch-style homes and brick multi-unit buildings, may built in the early 20th century. Students here attend Chicago Public Schools’ Kelly High School.

Nearby McKinley Park is the center of recreation, picnics, swimming, festivals, sports and outdoor activities for residents.
