Located just miles away from Lake Michigan in Porter County, Chesterton is a Midwestern town with modern amenities while still maintaining its small town charm. Conveniently located close to Lake Michigan and the Indiana Dunes and only 50 miles southeast of Chicago, it is a popular destination for vacationers.

Located on fertile lands with ample plant and animal life surrounding the area, Chesterton was inhabited by a number of Native American tribes for hundreds of years before European settlement. The last two tribes to inhabit the Chesterton area were the Miami and Potawatomi Native Americans. After the Potawatomi sold their land to the US Government in 1812, settlers flocked to the area, and it quickly grew into a bustling farming community. The area was first named Coffee Creek, after a nearby stream, but was named Calumet in 1850. However, with another town in Indiana named Calumet, the name was once again changed in 1870 to Chesterton, and it has remained that way for nearly 150 years.

The Chesterton Public School System, comprised of seven schools, serves the area. The district is made up of five elementary schools, Chesterton Middle School, and Chesterton High School. There are also two private schools located in the community: St Patrick Catholic School and Fairhaven Baptist Elementary. Public transportation is available on the South Shore Rail Line, which connects Chesterton to South Bend and Chicago. Valparaiso’s V-Line shuttle service runs through the town as well, providing transport between Valparaiso and the Indiana Dunes.

Chesterton’s location makes it the perfect destination for vacationers, while residents enjoy all the community has to offer year-round. With a number of bike trails and golf courses, as well as a dozen public parks, the community is brimming with activity during the summer months. The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is just minutes away, encompassing 25 miles and 15,000 acres along the southern shoreline of Lake Michigan. One of the most popular events in Chesterton is the Wizard of Oz Festival, which is the largest in the world. A Chesterton tradition, it was briefly relocated to Valparaiso, but is once again back in Chesterton.
