Located along Lake Michigan, Hammond is the most populous city in Lake County, Indiana. Just miles from downtown Chicago and with the tax advantages of Indiana, Hammond is a popular destination for a number of large businesses, including BP, Cargill and Unilever, among others.
The first settlers arrived in the area in 1847, settling along the south end of Lake Michigan, between the Grand and Little Calumet rivers. These initial settlers were German farmers, and that was the extent of industry in Hammond for the first 20 years. However, its convenient location and abundant fresh water from Lake Michigan drove the George H. Hammond Meat-Packing Company to build a factory there in 1869. Hammond was incorporated 15 years later in 1884, named after the very company that sparked its industrialization.
Hammond is served by the School City of Hammond, with over two dozen public schools under their direction. With 14 primary schools, five middle schools and five high schools, it is one of the largest districts in Indiana. There are a number of private schools in the area as well, including the highly-regarded Bishop Noll Institute. Purdue University has a satellite campus located in Hammond, and there are a number of smaller, privately-owned, colleges and universities with campuses in Hammond. Interstates 80, 90 and 94 run through Hammond, and the South Shore Line offers rail transportation from Chicago to South Bend. Amtrak provides twice-daily service in Hammond, connecting passengers to Chicago, Detroit, and beyond.
Hammond is home to the Festival of the Lakes celebration, an annual five-day celebration highlighting Hammond’s many great amenities. Each day begins at one of the many parks or beaches located in Hammond, and food and drink are provided by local vendors. There are numerous activities for children, and live entertainment is featured every night. The celebration includes a fishing party, car show, and concludes with a Polka Party on Sunday night.
