Buchanan

Located in Berrien County in Southwestern Michigan on just over 2.5 square miles, Buchanan’s motto is “Life is better here.” Named as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation, and with a downtown lined with redbud trees, Buchanan is a popular place to live for not just the environmentally-conscious, but people from all walks of life.

The area was first settled in 1833, where the McCoy Creek and St. Joseph River meet, and the village itself was platted in 1842. In 1858, the village was platted, and was named after the 15th President of the United States, James Buchanan. For hundreds of years, the St. Joseph River was used as a major transportation route for Native American tribes in the area, and historical sites commemorating this can still be seen today.

There are four schools in Buchanan, consisting of Ottawa and Moccasin Elementary, Buchanan Middle School, and Buchanan High School. Buchanan’s high school is known for their strong sports, holding multiple state championships in both men’s and women’s athletics, the most decorated being men’s tennis. Buchanan is located less than 10 miles from the Indiana Toll Road, and 20 miles east of I-94. In nearby Niles, residents have easy access to Amtrak, and South Bend provides rail travel on the South Shore Line.

Buchanan draws thousands of visitors every year for its Redbud MX motocross track, which features the largest jump on the circuit. Every 4th of July, the track hosts an extremely popular professional AMA motocross race. The Tin Shop Theater also attracts many with local performances throughout the summer, with a variety of shows for patrons of all ages. Pears Mill, built in 1857 and still open for visitors during the summer months, is a flour mill which operated on water power from the McCoy Creek. The town has abundant recreational facilities, with baseball and softball fields available for Little League use.
