Located on the far north side of Chicago, West Ridge – also referred to as West Rogers Park or North Town – is considered one of Chicago's most diverse communities.
First settled by the Potawotami Indians in the early 17th century, German and Luxembourger farmers made their way to the area in the 1830s and 1840s and gave rise to the neighborhood of Ridgeville. The community was later annexed by the city of Chicago in 1893, although it didn't experience much growth until the 1900s. Residential development grew rapidly after World War I, as many bungalows, two-flats and apartment buildings were built in the area. Today, West Ridge is a diverse community catering to a variety of residents.
West Ridge real estate includes everything from red brick Chicago-style bungalows to two-flats, three-flats and condominiums. In 2012, the average sales price for a single-family home in West Ridge was $283,117, while the average condominium cost $67,677 (source: Midwest Real Estate Data, LLC).
The neighborhood is served by the Chicago Public School District, which includes West Ridge Elementary School, Clinton Elementary School, Mather High School and many others in the area. Students also have a number of private schools within a short distance. West Ridge is easily accessible by the Edens Expressway, the CTA Red Line and the Metra's Union Pacific North Line.
With its numerous city parks, West Ridge offers a number of recreational opportunities throughout the year. The community's Indian Boundary Park features a small zoo, tennis courts, playground and duck-filled lagoon. The nearby Warren Park has almost 90 acres of parkland with a skate park, nine-hole golf course, bike path, batting cages and an outdoor ice rink during the winter. On Devon Avenue, residents and visitors will find several authentic ethnic restaurants and boutique shops. Katsu, a local sushi spot, was also recently named a winner of Zagat's prestigious Chicago Restaurants survey, in the Top Food category.
