About Aurora

Located approximately 40 miles west of downtown Chicago, Aurora is the second most populous city in Illinois. Known for its historic downtown located on the Fox River, Aurora earned the nickname “City of Lights” because it was one of the first cities in the United States to implement an all-electric street lighting system in 1881.

In 1834, following the Black Hawk War, the McCarty brothers formally created East and West Aurora, with the two towns unifying in 1857. Heavy industry attracted many generations of European immigrants, and Aurora became the main economic center of the Fox Valley region.

The Aurora area is home to an impressive collection of architecture, including properties designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Bruce Goff and George Grant Elmslie. Aurora real estate also offers a large number of homes within subdivisions, as well as historic Sears Catalog Homes and seven Lustron all-steel homes.

Aurora is served by six school districts: Aurora East School District 131, Aurora West School District 129, Indian Prairie School District 204, Batavia Public School District 101, Oswego Community Unit School District 308, and Kaneland Community Unit School District 302. Waubonsie Valley High School is one of the few Illinois schools to be ranked 9 out of 10 by GreatSchools. Aurora is also home to the prestigious Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, a state-funded residential magnet school for grades 10 to 12. The average sales price for a single-family home in Aurora was $137,675 in 2012, and the average condominium was $102,547 (source: Midwest Real Estate Data, LLC).

The town boasts historical walking tours, the Air Classics Museum of Aviation and a number of live theaters. The Hollywood Casino Aurora is a dockside gaming facility with 53,000 square feet located on the river in downtown Aurora. The River Edge Park features a multi-acre park site on the Fox River and a performance venue. Numerous shops and eclectic dining options can also be found in the historic downtown, including Naf Naf Grill and Luigi's House.
