About Crown Point

Known as “the Hub of Lake County,” Crown Point is a rapidly-growing town in Northwestern Indiana. Crown Point was recently named as a top spot for job seekers in Indiana, as the city’s working age population has grown by more than 20% in the past three years.

Solon Robinson was the first settler to land in Crown Point, in October 1834, although Lake County was not incorporated until 1837. Liverpool was briefly named the county seat, but Robinson paid $500 to build a courthouse in Crown Point, making that the county seat. Although this led to growth in the town, it was not incorporated until 1868. A new courthouse, locally known as the “Grand Old Lady,” was built in 1878 and was host to a number of historical events, including: presidential campaign speeches, famous horse showings, the first running of the Cobe Trophy (won by Louis Chevrolet), and a multitude of celebrity weddings, including Cassius Clay’s (who would become famed boxer Muhammad Ali).

As Crown Point lies in two townships (Center and Ross), there are two school districts serving the area. Those who live in Center Township attend the Crown Point Community School Corporation, which is comprised of 11 schools for grades K-12. In addition to conventional schools, the Crossroads Alternative Achievement Center is available for students who learn best with alternative teaching methods. The Merrillville Community School District is slightly smaller, with five elementary schools, an intermediate school for grades 5-6, a middle school, and Merrillville High School. A number of parochial schools are located in Crown Point, as well as Hyles-Anderson College and the University of Saint Francis. The Gary/Chicago International Airport is only a short drive from Crown Point, just up the Indiana Toll Road, making air travel throughout the country easily accessible for residents and visitors.

The Lake County Fair, the second largest county fair in Indiana, is held in Crown Point every year in early August. One of the most popular attractions in the area, it features a demolition derby, monster trucks, and a number of horse shows. The Corn Roast, Taste of Crown Point, and the Footstock Benefit Concert, a charity concert organized by Crown Point High School students, are other events that provide entertainment downtown. Crown Point has an extensive Parks and Recreation department, with a mission to provide “health, inspiration and education while enriching quality of life.” The department maintains nineteen parks, as well as a public pool, skate park, and an ice rink in the winter.
