About South Haven

South Haven is part of the Porter County, Indiana Area. Located in Northwest Indiana, just off the shores of Lake Michigan, Porter County is home to a rich railway heritage which is quickly becoming a favorite tourist destination. Thanks to its close proximity to the Indiana Dunes State Park, thousands of visitors flock to the county every year to take in all the area has to offer.

The first modern settlers in the area were two Native American tribes: the Potawatomi and Miami. They, later in conjunction with the French and English, lived in villages along major waterways, so the first village in what is currently known as Porter was not recorded until 1836. At this time, the area was named for Captain David Porter, a decorated U.S. Naval Officer.

Porter County is home to an acclaimed public school system, as well as a number of private education options. Valparaiso University, a 4-year Lutheran institution, is located in the town of Porter itself, as well as Ivy Tech Community College. The Indiana Toll Road offers easy Interstate travel, and numerous railroad companies serve Porter's residents, with Amtrak offering daily service.

Numerous parks, trails and gardens dot the local landscape, providing opportunities for walking, running, biking and cross-country skiing. For Naturalists, the Brinkca-Cross Gardens, spanning more than four acres, showcase the numerous plant species native to the area. The Indiana Dunes State Park, offering hiking trails and picturesque dune landscapes, is a National Natural Landmark, and a large part of the county's history, and its future.
