About Winthrop Harbor

Situated near the Illinois border along the shores of Lake Michigan, Winthrop Harbor is a small community known as the home of North Point Marina, the largest marina on the Great Lakes. Incorporated as a village in 1901, the community's history dates back to the 1830s, when the first settlers built homes in the area.

Winthrop Harbor School District #1 consists of two schools: Westfield School and North Prairie Junior High School. High school students are served by Zion-Benton Township High School. The community features a train station along Metra's Union Pacific North Line, which provides direct access to Chicago's Ogilvie Transportation Center.

Consisting of 1,500 boat slips, public beaches, fishing charters, restaurants and the Winthrop Harbor Yacht Club, North Point Marina draws nearly a million visitors to the area each year. Winthrop Harbor also boasts the Schlader Recreation Center, which features more than 20,000 square feet of space, as well as a park with a gazebo, tennis and basketball courts, baseball fields and a skate park.
