About Crystal Lake
Located in northeastern Illinois, in McHenry County, Crystal Lake is a city of over 40,000 located 45 miles northwest of downtown Chicago.
Crystal Lake was formed by the merging of two communities which were originally settled in the early 19th century: Nunda, which was named after an area in upstate New York, and Crystal Lake, which was named after one of the area’s first residents remarked that “the waters were as clear as crystal.” Although the lake was named Crystal Lake, the town was known as Crystal Ville until 1840. Both Crystal Lake and Nunda were incorporated in 1874, and they remained separate entities until 1914, when Nunda (now known as North Crystal Lake) was annexed, forming the city now known as Crystal Lake.
Crystal Lake is home to a number of school districts including District 47, which provides education for children in grades Pre K-8, and Community High School District 155, which operates the city’s three high schools – Crystal Lake Central High School, Crystal Lake South High School and Prairie Ridge High School. District 47 consists of 14 schools, with ten elementary schools and four middle schools. Crystal Lake is also home to a number of private schools, including St. Thomas the Apostle and Immanuel Lutheran, serving grades Pre K-8. Rail service is available to downtown Chicago via the Crystal Lake station on the Metra’s Union Pacific Northwest Line. For domestic and international travel, O’Hare International Airport is located less than 45 minutes away.
Crystal Lake is known for the natural beauty in the city and surrounding areas, and this is highlighted by the efforts of the Crystal Lake Park District. The park district operates nearly 50 parks, which span over 2,000 acres. With tennis courts, basketball courts, soccer fields, baseball diamonds, volleyball courts, pools, recreation trails and more, the parks feature dozens of amenities and activities for residents of all ages and interests. The lake itself is open to the public, and can be enjoyed for aquatic recreation whenever the Chicago weather permits. Duke’s Alehouse and Kitchen, located in downtown Crystal Lake and known for its extensive craft beer offerings, is one of a number of highly-regarded restaurants in the city.
