About Darien

The city of Darien began in the 1830s with the settlement of two close-knit farming communities, Cass and Lace.

Better roads and automobiles drove development in the southwestern DuPage County suburb. Crops and livestock gave way to subdivisions.

Darien became a city in 1969 after four subdivisions joined forces to vote for incorporation. They named the community Darien after a Connecticut town.

Hinsdale Township High School District 86 operates Hinsdale South High School in Darien. Students in part of the city attend Downers Grove South High School.

Darien is bordered by Downers Grove, Westmont, Woodridge, Lemont and Willowbrook. The city of 22,860 people offers easy access to three major interstates – I-55, I-355 and I-294.
