About Beverly Shores
Sunny beaches by day; starry skies at night. Welcome to Beverly Shores.
Originally designed as a resort, Beverly Shores is 36 miles east of downtown Chicago, just a train ride away on the South Shore Line.
The community is a haven for nature lovers, cyclists, bird watchers and beach goers. Many Chicagoans make it their second home.
Visitors and residents alike enjoy the Dunes and beachfront with its natural beauty. The community is part of the International Dark-Sky movement to limit artificial outdoor lighting so residents can enjoy the area’s natural beauty without light pollution.
Locals call Beverly Shores “The Island” because it is situated along four miles of Lake Michigan beaches and surrounded by the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Park.
The original developer sold his northwest Indiana properties to his younger brother who built a school, hotel with botanic gardens, championship 18-hole golf course, clubhouse, beachfront casino and theater. The developer, Robert Bartlett also purchased 16 structures from the Chicago World’s Fair and moved them to Beverly Shores. Five of the structures still stand within the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, leased by the Indiana Historic Landmarks Foundation.
The town’s renovated Spanish Revival Colonial Revival train station is on the National Register of Historic Places, home to a museum, gallery and local art exhibits.
The federal government acquired much of National Lakeshore Park. Debate regarding whether they would acquire the rest created uncertainty, slowing developing here for decades.
Today the town’s remaining land, island and strip bordering U.S. 12 remain. The 1990s and 2000s saw a resurgence in development with several million-dollar homes built on the dunes near the lakefront. New restaurants have opened as well.
Homes including classic and contemporary single-family homes with landscaped lots and beautiful lake views.
Students attend Michigan City Schools’ unified district including Pine Elementary School, Barker Middle School and Michigan City High School.
