About Highland

Situated just 21 miles from downtown Chicago and minutes from the shores of Lake Michigan, Highland is ideally located to experience all that Northwest Indiana has to offer.

Highland’s first settlers, Michael and Judith Johnston, arrived from Ohio in 1847. Although the town initially grew slowly, the expansion of the Chicago & Atlantic Railroad through town added agricultural and manufacturing industries to the area. The town was incorporated in 1910. Highland has hosted a number of important speeches in Wicker Memorial Park, including a speech by President Calvin Coolidge in 1927, and Senator (and soon-to-be-president) Barack Obama in 2008.

The School Town of Highland runs the public school system, which is comprised of six schools: four elementary schools, one middle school, and Highland High School. There are three private schools in Highland: Highland Christian School, Our Lady of Grace, and Calumet Baptist School. Although the Gary/Chicago International Airport is the closest commercial airport to Highland, many residents travel from one of Chicago’s airports, either O’Hare International Airport or Chicago Midway Airport.

Highland is home to a number of popular bars and restaurants, the most popular being Beer Geeks, a pub which specializes in craft beers. Highland is also home to a number of parks, which host volleyball, soccer, baseball, softball and Pop Warner leagues every year.
