Located in northwest Indiana, east of Gary and west of South Bend, La Porte, called “The Maple City,” is a historic city known for its summer fairs and outdoor festivals.

La Porte was first settled in October, 1832, and a Federal Land Office was established in 1833. The Land Office drove population growth so much that, in 1835, La Porte was incorporated as a town. The first medical school in the Midwest, the La Porte Medical School was founded in 1842, and one of its earliest students, William Worrall Mayo, went on the establish the world renowned Mayo Clinic.

The city of La Porte is served by the La Porte Community School Corporation, with a dozen public primary schools and one public high school in the area. La Lumiere School, a private boarding school, once attended by Chief Justice John Roberts, is also located in La Porte. La Porte High School, with eight state championships, is a state powerhouse, winning the most titles of any school in Indiana.

La Porte is known for its scenic parks and numerous Maple trees. With over a dozen parks and nine lakes, La Porte provides residents with numerous opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. In the summer, La Porte hosts The La Porte County Fair, the oldest in Indiana, as well as annual boat and bicycle races. La Porte is served by Amtrak, three major interstates (I-80, I-90, I-94), as well as TransPorte, offering local shuttle service.
