About New Chicago

New Chicago is part of the Lake County, Indiana Area. Indiana's second most populous county, Lake County is located in Northwest Indiana, and is a part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The western part of the county shares a border with Indiana, and is located just ten miles from the Chicago Loop.

Lake County was originally a part of La Porte County, founded in 1832. In 1835, La Porte County grew due to the establishment of a Federal Land Office, that towns began to break away from the county. In 1836, La Porte County was broken up, and Porter County was formed. One year later, however, Porter County was broken up even further, and Lake County was formed. Named for its location on Lake Michigan, Lake County offers miles of pristine beaches.

The public school system in Lake County is divided into over a dozen independent governing bodies, with most towns overseeing their own education systems. A number of colleges are located in the county, with the most notable being Purdue University's Calumet Campus. Lake County's central location makes travel to Chicago and Detroit easy, and the area is served by the Indiana Toll Road, as well as Interstates 65, 80, 90 and 94. Amtrak runs multiple services traveling through Lake County, offering daily travel throughout the Midwest.

Lake County is home to a portion of the Indiana Dunes, running for 25 miles along Lake Michigan. The 15,000 acre park is a popular destination, with numerous trails, historic and natural areas, and opportunities for interaction with nature. Many multinational businesses have operations in Lake County, perhaps most notably US Steel, as the Gary Steelyards line the Western shoreline.
