About Ogden Dunes

Located along the shores of Lake Michigan, just outside of Michigan City, Ogden Dunes is a popular vacation town in Northwest Indiana. Known for its scenic location within the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, thousands of visitors flock to the area every year to experience the white sand beaches, massive dunes, and diverse wildlife.

The land on which Ogden Dunes presently sits was originally owned by Francis A. Ogden, who owned the land until his death in 1914. The town first gained notoriety in 1927, when the Grand Beach Ski Club bought a piece of land on one of the highest dunes in town. On this dune, they constructed a 192 foot tall ski jump, which was billed as the highest ski jump in the United States. The Great Depression caused a number of financial setbacks for the ski club and the tower was sold in 1935. Today, a historical marker notes the place where the great ski jump once stood.

Ogden Dunes students are served by the Portage Township School System, which is comprised of 11 schools: eight elementary schools, Fegely and Willowcreek Middle Schools, and Portage High School. In addition to the Portage Public School System, there are three private schools in Portage, serving children from grades K-12. Although no commercial airports are located in the area, Gary/Chicago International airport is only a short drive away, and O’Hare and Midway International Airports are within an hour. Coach USA offers coach transportation to Chicago’s airports, as well as South Bend and Notre Dame. Interstate 94 and the Indiana Toll Road make transportation throughout the Midwest easily accessible, and the South Shore Rail Line provides train service from nearby Michigan City between Chicago and South Bend.

Ogden Dunes is home to a number of parks, which feature soccer fields, basketball courts, playground equipment, picnic tables, outdoor grills, tennis courts, and a walking trail that cuts through the town and connects to the Indiana Dunes. One of the most popular destinations is the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, which encompasses 15,000 acres and spans nearly 25 miles. Featuring pristine sand, swimming, boating, fishing and hiking, it is one of the most popular beaches in the Midwest.
