About Porter

Located in Northwest Indiana, just off the shores of Lake Michigan, Porter is a town with a rich railway heritage that’s quickly becoming a favorite tourist destination. Thanks to its close proximity to the Indiana Dunes State Park, thousands of visitors flock to Porter every year to enjoy the many amenities and scenic beauty it offers year-round.

The first modern settlers in Porter were two Native American tribes: the Potawatomi and Miami. The tribes, in conjunction with the French and English, lived in villages along major waterways, so the first village in what is currently known as Porter was not recorded until 1836. At this time, the area was named for Captain David Porter, a decorated U.S. Naval Officer.

Porter is home to an acclaimed public school system, as well as a number of private education options. Valparaiso University, a four-year Lutheran institution, is located in Porter, as well as Ivy Tech Community College. The Indiana Toll Road offers easy interstate travel, and numerous railroad companies serve Porter’s residents, with Amtrak offering daily service.

An abundance of parks, trails and gardens dot the Porter landscape, providing opportunities for walking, running, biking and cross-country skiing. For nature lovers, the Brinkca-Cross Gardens, spanning more than four acres, showcase the numerous plant species native to the area. The Indiana Dunes State Park, offering hiking trails and picturesque dune landscapes, is a National Natural Landmark, and a large part of Porter’s history, not to mention its future.
