About Magnificent Mile

The Magnificent Mile lives up to its name. The one-mile stretch of North Michigan Avenue is known one of the most vibrant and successful commercial, residential and cultural destinations in the world.

Skyscrapers, landmark architecture, premier retailers, individual boutiques, distinctive restaurants line the streets, extending north to North Avenue and south to Randolph Street. Only steps from both Lake Michigan and the Chicago River, the Magnificent Mile is also home to world-class and award-winning hotels and prestigious education and medical facilities.

The concept for the Magnificent Mile was part of the 1909 Burnham Plan of Chicago, and real estate developer Arthur Rubloff gave the district its name in the 1940s. The Magnificent Mile is steeped in Chicago cultural history, with nearly a dozen buildings that are Chicago Landmarks, National Historic Landmarks or listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Some of the world's tallest buildings are located in the Magnificent Mile district including 875 North Michigan Avenue, the building formerly known as the John Hancock Center.

Today, the Magnificent Mile is home to a mixture of upscale department stores, restaurants, luxury retailers, commercial buildings and some of the city's major advertising and media agencies, including the Chicago Tribune.

In the Magnificent Mile district, residents live in luxury condominiums and contemporart high-rises with all the modern amenities. Public transportation is plentiful with numerous bus lines running up and down Michigan Avenue.
