About Stevensville

Located just an hour and a half from downtown Chicago, Stevensville is situated in Southwestern Michigan, just off of Lake Michigan. Part of Berrien County, Stevensville is a popular destination for vacationers, due to its proximity to the lake and abundant natural amenities.

Thomas L. Stevens purchased 160 acres of land in 1869, quickly platted the land and named it Stevensville. In 1872, the plat was legally recorded, although the state did not charter the village until March, 1893. The state granted the charter, railroad tracks were laid, and a depot was quickly built to ensure a railroad stop to pick up fruit, the area’s strongest industry. Over the years, as the wooded land was cleared, a community settlement formed, and stores and businesses sprung up in the town center.

Stevensville is served by the Lakeshore School District, which also serves the neighboring town of Baroda. The district is comprised of three elementary schools, a middle school, and Lakeshore High School. The school offers over 25 different clubs and activities in which students participate, as well as a state champion marching band. Interstate 94 provides easy access to Chicago and Detroit, and Amtrak runs daily services through Berrien County.

Berrien County offers a number of amenities for residents, including numerous parks, resorts, beaches, golf courses, and wineries. The Warren Dunes State Park is just a short drive from Stevensville, and attracts over one million visitors annually to its large sand dunes and lakeshore beaches. Harbor Shores, the host of the 73rd and 75th Senior PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014, respectively, offers world class golf in nearby Benton Harbor.
