About Spring Grove

Located near the Illinois-Wisconsin border, Spring Grove is a growing village in McHenry County. Sitting one hour northwest of downtown Chicago, Spring Grove offers residents the calm of suburban life, while remaining convenient to all that Chicago has to offer.

The county draws its name from one of the first explorers to reach the area: Major William McHenry. McHenry led an expeditionary force through much of northern Illinois in the 1830s, during the Black Hawk War. McHenry’s forces settled along the Fox River, specifically at an old Native American fort along the west side of the riverbank. Thanks to its location near the Fox Valley River and the Chain O’Lakes, Spring Grove became a popular destination for settlers and grew rapidly in the 1800s.

The average sales price of a single-family home in Spring Grove in 2014 was $201,924.

Spring Grove is served by two separate school districts: Nippersink School District and School District 157. These districts offer two grade schools, one middle school, and the Richmond Burton Community High School. The community is located along Interstate 90, offering easy access into downtown Chicago. Metra provides commuter rail service into Chicago, as well as west toward Fox Lake.

The community is home to a number of parks, offering fishing, picnicking and hiking, as well as baseball, football and soccer fields. The Lyle C. Thomas Park and Nippersink Canoe Base offers residents four different canoe launches along the creek, which features banks and sandbars cutting through rolling farmlands. The creek is a popular destination for canoeists, anglers and picnic lovers alike.
