About Vernon Hills
Vernon Hills is situated on almost eight square miles in Northwest Lake County. The land that encompasses Vernon Hills was originally founded in 1851 for a 200-acre farm, and did not see further development until the 1950s when a portion of the land was purchased for a residential community and golf course. Incorporated in 1958, the community's motto, “People Planning With Pride” is evident today as the village is a busy retail hub, boasting the Westfield Hawthorn shopping mall and numerous strip shopping centers stretching along Milwaukee Avenue and Townline Road.
Vernon Hills students are served by Hawthorn School District, which offers six elementary schools, as well as Hawthorn Middle Schools North and South, and three high schools including Adlai Stevenson for those in southern Vernon Hills. Residents enjoy convenient access to downtown Chicago thanks to the Vernon Hills Metra Station and the Tri-State Tollway, which is located just east of the community. The average 2012 sales price of a home in Vernon Hills was $391,361(source: Midwest Real Estate Data, LLC).
