About Delavan Lake

Delavan Lake is part of the Delavan Area. Located in Walworth County, Delavan is the name of both a city and a town located in southeastern Wisconsin. Part of the City of Delavan lies within the Town of Delavan, and the unincorporated communities of East Delavan, Inlet and Lake Lawn lie within the town as well.

The area where Delavan presently sits was originally part of the Indiana Territory and then the Illinois Territory, until ultimately becoming a part of the Wisconsin Territory in 1836. Once Wisconsin was granted statehood in 1848, Delavan as it stands today finally began to take shape. During the mid to late 19th century, Delavan was home to 26 circus companies. The world-famous P.T. Barnum Circus was founded in the town in 1871, and immediately put this quiet Wisconsin town on the map.

The Delavan-Darien School District is responsible for the operation of the public schools in the community, and operates five schools. The district is comprised of three elementary schools, one middle school, and Delavan-Darien High School. Interstate access is available via Interstate 43.

The City of Delavan hosts two high-profile events every year, the Delavan Train Show and the Heritage Festival. Taking place in March and August respectively, the two events draw attention and visitors from across the county, as well as the state as a whole. Arguably the most popular attraction in Delavan is Delavan Lake, which spans nearly 2000 acres. The lake features popular fishing spots, and is popular for canoeing, boating, swimming, and numerous water sports. The lake is also notable for its multiple public boat landings, as well as beachfront that is open to the public.
