About Fontana

Located in Walworth County, Fontana-on-Geneva Lake (referred to locally as "Fontana") is a village of nearly 2,000 on the western shore of Geneva Lake. Sitting in one of the most scenic areas of Wisconsin, it is a popular destination for residents and tourists alike.

The first settlers in Walworth County arrived at Geneva Lake in the 1830s. In the mid-1830s, Christopher Payne built a log cabin, dam and mill in Geneva Lake, and officially became the county’s first settler. The county was officially created in 1838, and was named in honor of Judge Reuben Hyde Walworth, the president of the New York State Temperance Society. There were initially five towns, and in 1846 the number became 17, where it stands today.

Fontana offers direct access to Geneva Lake, which serves as a venue for leisure activities including boating, skiing, swimming, fishing, and canoeing. During the summer, beach-goers also enjoy The Village of Fontana Beach, which features movie viewings on the beach after sunset. Among the top-rated restaurants in Fontana are Chuck’s Tavern, Gordy’s Boat House Bar and Restaurant, and 240 West, which is located at The Abbey Resort. Tourists and locals also flock to The Abbey Resort for the annual Geneva Lakes Antique and Classic Boat Show, a nationally-renowned boat show featuring vintage watercrafts from all over the U.S.
