About Salem

Located in Kenosha County, Salem is a town of over 10,000 located in southeastern Wisconsin. The town is home to multiple unincorporated communities, including Benet Lake, Camp Lake, Fox River, Lake Shangrila, Salem, Salem Oaks, Trevor, Voltz Lake and Wilmot.

The first settlers to arrive in Salem were John Dodge and the Bullen brothers, who arrived in the summer of 1837. They quickly built a settlement on the Fox River, choosing the location due to its ability to easily facilitate water transportation. The town was established in 1842, and while it has steadily grown throughout the years, it has never lost its Midwestern charm.

Salem is home to nine lakes, which allow for ample recreational opportunities including fishing, boating, swimming, waterskiing, tubing, paddle boarding and more. The town parks include biking, hiking and walking trails, with popular hunting areas also located nearby. Residents also enjoy golfing year-round thanks to the Salem Valley Country Club, which is open all year long. Among the local favorite restaurants in the area are The 75th Street Inn Bar & Grill and Siebert’s Pub, known for its fish fry and Reuben Sandwich.
