Joel grew up in Saint Joseph in a family that seemed to have real estate in its DNA. Joel's grandfather arrived in Saint Joe from Germany with seven dollars in his pocket. Over the years; he managed to raise a family, work as a carpenter, and to purchase several investment homes. Although Joel entered church ministry and served in California, New England, and Michigan; real estate has always been part of his life. In the mid 80s, Joel and his wife, Victoria, established the Nathaniel Hosmer Inn in Camden, Maine. He also developed investment property in Aruba as well as renovating an 1865 farmhouse in the Grand Rapids area. 

Coming back to the Saint Joe area for early ‘retirment,' it was a natural for Joel to join his daughter, Gretta Volkenstein, on her growing, real estate team. (Gretta's team was honored with the Diamond Award for 2019 sales in excess of 15 million dollars.) Joel specializes in investment properties (he owns several in the area), vacation rentals (he owns one in Harbor Club in South Haven), and finding that ideal ideal residence in the the Saint Joe area.  

Joel realizes that life is about people and relationships. Relationships are one of the key values of @properties Michigan and that is a primary reason that Joel has connected with this innovative company serving southwest Michigan. Bringing that personal perspective to every conversation and transaction is what motivates Joel each and every day.

Joel graduated from Evangel College in Springfield, MO; Gordon-Conwell Seminary in Boston, and has an earned doctorate from the Chicago Theological Seminary. Over the years, Joel has served in leadership with the Berrien County Association of Churches, on the board of the Benton Harbor Street Ministry, and as a member of the Berrien Community Foundation. Joel is glad to be back in southwest Michigan; back to family, back to Lake Michigan, and back to the town his father once dubbed "the capital of the world."
