How to Design a Multi-Functional Flex Space

Amid the pandemic, flex rooms and spaces have proven to be incredibly valuable as we've brought our work, school, fitness, and hobbies home. They serve a variety of purposes, from a home office and study spot to an exercise space to an extra bedroom and playroom. Regardless of how you use your flex space, there are many ways to get the most out of your extra room. Here's how:

Choose functional pieces

When it comes to picking furniture for your multipurpose flex space, be sure to go with functional pieces that cater to various needs. For example, a sleeper sofa, futon, or daybed are all great space-saving options for a guest room and serve as seating by day, and a comfy spot to sleep at night. Although a bit more permanent, hideaway Murphy beds are the definition of functional, and fold into a wall or cabinet to provide extra space.

An ottoman with storage space is also a simple but effective way to accomplish style and function. Ottomans come in a variety of sizes and textures. and are great for storing things like toys, exercise equipment, electronics, and even towels, bedding, linens, and pillows.

If you're tight on space and your flex room serves as a home office, choose a smaller desk or one that's foldable. When not in use, foldable desks can easily tuck under a bed or behind a sofa. Desks with built-in hutches are also useful as they offer additional storage.

Add shelves

Bookshelves can be a quick and inexpensive way to add much-needed storage and functionality to your flex room. In addition to holding books, they can be used to house files, dumbbells and resistance bands, art materials, framed photos, gaming equipment, and more. Floating shelves offer even more floor space, and will add visual interest to your walls.

Utilize wallpaper

Over time, your flex room needs will change. Using wallpaper is a quick way to switch things up and set the tone of the room. Converting your flex space into a full-time nursery? Throw up a simple and modern wallpaper, or go for a more expressive option. Need to switch the space back to a home office? Simply remove the wallpaper and put up a pattern more suited to your work!

Install lighting

Use lighting to set the atmosphere of your flex space. Combine lighting sources at different levels of the room to create versatility. Add a floor lamp and armchair to an empty corner and create a cozy reading nook, and place a lamp on your desk for optimal work-from-home or study lighting. An overhead light creates overall brightness, and cultivates different vibes when installed with a dimmer switch.

Hang a mirror, or two

Add a mirror to create depth and make your space feel bigger and lighter. If your flex space functions as a home gym, mirrors are also great for working out and checking your form.

Don't forget a TV

Televisions are key to the many functions of flex rooms. You can watch movies or TV shows, stream at-home classes or exercise videos, or display art. If you can't mount your television, opt for a stand that doubles as a bookshelf or additional storage space.
