THE BASICS

Located 12 miles north of Chicago in Cook County, Evanston has a beautiful natural setting on Lake Michigan and features expansive parks, historic architecture and the world-renowned Northwestern University campus. The demographic of its 75,000 residents includes an eclectic mix of students, young professionals, families and seniors. With bustling business districts, arts and culture, and easy access to Chicago, Evanston offers the conveniences of city living in a suburban environment.

Northwestern University was established in 1851 by a group of Methodist business leaders, who eventually requested that the city be named Evanston after one of the university's founders, John Evans. The request was approved and Evanston was incorporated in 1872. Today, Evanston is locally known by its nickname, "E-town".

Evanston real estate offers everything from contemporary new-construction high rises to well-maintained single-family homes and townhomes to historic lakefront mansions. The town is comprised of a number of distinct neighborhoods -- many within walking distance to Evanston's thriving commercial areas. Pricing ranges from under $100,000 to well over $1 million, and the average 2012 sales price of a home was $513, 659 (source: Midwest Real Estate Data, LLC).

Students in the community attend schools within the Evanston-Skokie Community Consolidated School District 65 and Evanston Township High School. Transportation is convenient for residents and visitors thanks to the Edens Expressway, three Metra stations and the CTA Purple Line.

Evanston's downtown district adjoins Northwestern University and includes hundreds of businesses from boutiques, bookstores and galleries to theaters and restaurants. Outdoor recreation includes beaches, parks, jogging trails and bicycle paths. Northwestern University offers residents access to a full slate of Big Ten sports as well as cultural events and academic pursuits.

The city of Evanston had been the setting of number films, notably those of director John Hughes, including iconic coming-of-age films, Sixteen Candles (1984), Home Alone 3, and Rookie of the Year.
