Kensington

Kensington, Maryland is a true gem in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, boasting a rich history and Victorian architecture that has stood the test of time. Brainard Warner, known as the "founder of Kensington," envisioned a garden community that would leave a lasting impression on the area. Warner established a public library and newspaper in Kensington Park, his planned subdivision, in the late 1800s. Today, visitors can still experience the town's railroad roots by visiting the train station, which continues to welcome passengers and serves as a symbol of Kensington's enduring charm.

Kensington's early success was fueled by its location at the intersection of the BethesdatoBladensburg Road and the B&O Railroad line, which offered residents easy access to nearby cities. The town has since evolved into a year-round home for its residents and a haven for those seeking refuge from the bustling capital city. The Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission has worked diligently to ensure the preservation of the town's southernmost section, which remains largely unchanged since its inception and is a protected Historic District.

Recent revitalization projects have enhanced the shopping areas of Metropolitan and Howard Avenues, and the town has been able to add more parking thanks to the closure of a cement plant across from the train station. In 2007, Warner Circle in the center of the Historic District was purchased through the Montgomery County Legacy Open Space Program, transforming the land around the mansion into a County Park.

Kensington is the perfect place for those seeking a small-town atmosphere while still enjoying proximity to the metropolitan area. Whether you're a history buff, a lover of Victorian architecture, or simply looking for a charming community to call home, Kensington is sure to capture your heart.
