Munster, Indiana: Close to Illinois—Yet, Plenty to Discover on This Side of the State Line

Thinking about making the move to Munster? Come take a little tour first.

If you're considering a move from Illinois to Northwest Indiana, you may be surprised by just how close Munster really is.

In fact, Munster sits directly along the Illinois state line. The Pennsy Greenway even connects toward Lansing, Illinois, so you can quite literally cross the state line as part of a bike ride.

That's one of the things I like about Munster.

You can make a move to Indiana without necessarily feeling like you've moved far away from everything you already know.

Yet, let's stay on the Indiana side today, because there's more to discover here than you might think.

STOP #1: Start at Centennial Park

If we're doing a Munster tour, Centennial Park, Munster,IN is an easy place to start.

And don't picture a little neighborhood playground.

Munster's largest park includes walking paths, fishing, formal gardens, a dog park, playground, entertainment stage and plenty of open space. There's even a 9-hole golf course and driving range.

What I like about this stop: You can make it whatever kind of day you want.

Take a walk. Bring the dog. Hit some golf balls. Wander through the gardens. Catch an event. Or simply find a pretty spot and enjoy being outside.

That's a lot packed into one community park.

STOP #2: Walk Through Something You May Have Driven Past

Across from Centennial Park is one of Munster's most distinctive attractions: Community Veterans Memorial.

And if you've only noticed it while driving down Calumet Avenue, it's worth actually stopping.

This is a 6.5-acre walk-through memorial covering major conflicts including World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm. The experience incorporates landscaping, sculpture, a memorial brick pathway and a history trail. Admission is free.

What I like about this stop: It's not simply something to look at from the road. It's designed to be walked through and experienced.

It's also exactly the kind of place that makes you say:

"I've driven past that how many times and never stopped?"

STOP #3: Find the Little Historic Side of Munster

Next, I'd head toward Heritage Park.

This one feels completely different.

Heritage Park has gardens, a gazebo, wooded areas and a nature trail. It's also home to the historically restored Kaske House, which the Town says was listed on the Historical Register in 1998 and now houses a small museum operated by the Munster Historical Society.

This isn't necessarily the place that appears first when someone searches "things to do in Munster."

Which is exactly why I like including it.

Sometimes learning a community means finding the little places tucked between the places everyone already knows.

STOP #4: Get on the Pennsy Greenway

Now let's get moving.

The Pennsy Greenway Trail IL/IN is one of my favorite pieces of the Munster/Illinois connection.

The trail network links toward Lansing on the Illinois side and continues through Northwest Indiana, with Centennial Park serving as a natural Munster access point. Munster has even installed trail counters near both Centennial Park and the state line, along with a bike-repair station near the park.

So yes...

You can live in Indiana and bike to Illinois.
