Fortunately, Downers Grove doesn’t let fame go to its head. The village 22 miles west of downtown Chicago has racked up more than its share of accolades.
The DuPage County community was ranked by CNN as one of the best places in the U.S. for a healthy retirement due to the community’s numerous parks and quality healthcare. Forbes weighed in as well, naming Downers Grove one of America’s friendliest towns.
But wait there’s more. It also has been recognized for having some of the nation’s most educated population, with over 50% of its residents holding a Bachelor’s degree or higher. And the village earned a spot on the Chicago Tribune’s “Top 10 List of Downtowns.”
The community has plenty of boutiques and upscale restaurants to enjoy; and it hosts more than 140 community events and festivals. The village also has a bustling, diverse business district, home to several corporate headquarters.
Homes here are varied – from mid-19th century homes near the center of town to styles representing each generation since. As the village has attracted an influx of residents, it also has faced the issue of teardowns as many smaller older homes have been replaced with new large homes.
The community prides itself on the 25 Sears-Roebuck Catalog Homes in the community, built with kits between 1908 and 1940. The 1846 Blodgett House has been preserved as a museum of the Underground Railroad.
Downers Grove Grade School District 58, Center Cass District 66 and Community High School District 99 serve village students. The village has two public high schools – Downers Grove North and South. Downer’s Grove is also home to the prestigious Avery Coonley School, founded in 1906 and located in the village since 1929.
