Lake Zurich

At the heart of the idyllic Village of Lake Zurich is its namesake lake. A charming boardwalk lines the lake, just steps away from Main Street.

The Village regularly appears on “best places” lists for its highly rated schools and affordability. Almost 20,000 people make their home here. Sandra Bullock is not one of them, although her character in the movie Gravity claimed Lake Zurich as her hometown.

Lake Zurich has been named one of the top 100 “Best Places to Raise Your Family” by Frommer’s; “Top Twenty Affordable Places to live in the Country” by U.S. news and number one in Illinois for young families by the personal finance website

Residents enjoy skiing, fishing and swimming in the summer; in the winter brave souls can be found ice fishing in the middle of the lake.

Lake Zurich, northwest of Chicago in Lake County, was a farming community, first settled by European descendants in decidedly the 1830s and incorporated as a Village in 1896. True to its name, the Village has a Swiss chalet style.

The arrival of highways Rand Road (Route 12) and Half Day Road (Route 22) put Lake Zurich on the map as a resort area, bringing vacationing Chicagoans to the charming village.

As Chicago continued to expand northward, more people discovered the suburb offered an affordable alternative to surrounding communities. Housing developments began in the 1950s. Today there are a variety of single-family homes, custom new construction and some townhomes with neighborhood green space, ponds and parks. Students attend the highly rated Lake Zurich High School and Stevenson High School in nearby Lincolnshire.

The community has a small town feel with several community events. Since 1942, Lake Zurich’s Alpine Fest has been a popular event, attracting more than the 10,000 visitors for good old-fashioned carnival rides, entertainment and a parade down Main Street, the largest in Lake County.

The picturesque Henry J. Paulus Park is the site of a Craft Beer Festival. In the fall, Main Street is closed off for the popular Rock the Block event with street dancing, live bands and food by local eateries and trendy food trucks.

Residents have easy access to I-90 downtown via I-53. Commuters have access to Metra stations in Palatine and Barrington.
