Portage Park

Community Area: Portage Park

Located on the northwest side of Chicago, Portage Park is one of the 77 designated community areas that make up the city of Chicago. Bordered by Jefferson Park, Forest Glen, Irving Park, Dunning and Harwood Heights, Portage Park is rapidly becoming one of the most desirable areas to live in the city of Chicago.

Settled in the early 19th century, the area was first incorporated in 1850 as Jefferson Township, at the legendary Dickinson Tavern. Although the township was originally independent from the Chicago, it was annexed by the city in 1889, prior to the World’s Columbian Exposition. As the presence of streetcars grew in the city, settlement branched further out, making the area a popular destination for Chicago residents, a trait it still holds today.

Housing styles in Chicago North include a diverse mix of affordable single-family homes, apartment buildings, town homes, and condominiums. The average sales price of a single-family home in Portage Park in 2014 was $261,341.

The Chicago Public School District offers students a number of highly regarded public schools, including the award-winning Walter Payton College Prep School. The area is easily accessible by car thanks to the Kennedy Expressway and Lake Shore Drive. There are also dozens of CTA Lines and Metra railways, including the Union Pacific North Line and the Union Pacific Northwest Line, providing transportation to and from downtown Chicago and the north and northwest suburbs.

The centerpiece of the community is undoubtedly its namesake: Portage Park. This historic park, engrained in the history of Chicago, remains a focal point in the 21st century. The park is home to an Olympic-sized swimming pool, which hosted the 1959 Pan-American Games, and the U.S. trials for the 1972 Olympics. The park is also home to a field house, walking trails, gardens, and numerous ponds. The community is home to a number of bars and restaurants, with the aptly named “The Portage” a local favorite.
