The picturesque city on the eastern shore of Geneva Lake attracts visitors from just across the state line in Illinois and beyond with its natural beauty, wonderfully preserved homes and buildings and of course Geneva Lake.
The city has everything you would want for a great getaway or a place to call home: Beautiful beaches, golfing, boating, exploring Big Foot State Park, and hiking the Potawatomi Trail. Lake Geneva also has lake cruises, fine dining, lodging, shops and galleries.
Lake Geneva has long been a resort town for wealthy Chicagoans and titans of industry including the Mortons and Wrigleys who built mansions along the lake. After the Chicago Fire of 1871, many moved to their summer homes while the city was being rebuilt. The area became known as the “Newport of the West”.
Hugh Hefner built his first Playboy Club in Lake Geneva in 1968. The club later was converted into a resort that included a recording studio where Nine Inch Nails, Cheap Trick and Iron Maiden among other bands recorded. Today the former club is home to the Grand Geneva Resort and Spa.
The city has many fine homes and buildings from its early history – from summer retreats to Victorian mansions and grand estates. The city has several unique shops and restaurants ranging with everything from diners to fine dining.
Students attend Lake Geneva Schools including Eastview Elementary; Lake Geneva Middle School and Badger High School.
Lake Geneva has numerous parks, trails, nature preserves, playgrounds and beaches. Elm Park runs along the lake shoreline with public access to a 26-mile path along the lake. A prairie-style library, dedicated in 1954, was built on land donated to the city in 1884. The city’s Flat Iron Park hosts several festivals with free musical entertainment throughout the summer as well as Art in the Park and the Lake Geneva Jaycees Venetian Festival.
Lake Geneva is located 75 miles from downtown Chicago; and 45 miles from Milwaukee with convenient access to three major airports.
