Whitewater was named after the white sand that lines the beds of Whitewater Creek and Spring Brook, and it was at the junction of these two bodies of water that the community was founded. Although initial settlement in the early 19th century was steady, the population exploded in the 1850s, as railroad lines spread into the area. The original settlers were predominately farmers from New England, who arrived via Chicago. The area was initially covered with thick, wild prairie grasses, but the complexion quickly changed, with wheat and corn growing where prairie and dense forests once stood.
The Whitewater Unified School District serves the community, and is comprised of five schools: two elementary schools, Whitewater Middle School, Whitewater High School, and the LINCS Charter School. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is also located in the city. Interstate access is available nearby via Interstate 94, while U.S. Highway 41 and 45 offer convenient transportation across the state.
Whitewater is home to a number of popular festivals and celebrations which take place throughout the year. The first of which, Freeze Fest, consists of brave residents plunging into the icy waters and takes place every January. Whitewater is also known for its 4th of July celebration, as well as the Minneiska Water Ski shows, which occur on Saturday evenings during the summer. Taking place on Whitewater Lake, these shows draw crowds from the community, as well as the surrounding areas. Whitewater Lake is a popular summer destination for residents of all ages, and is popular for numerous activities, including: boating, fishing, swimming, water skiing, tubing, and wakeboarding.
