Little Italy

Community Area: Near West Side

Located between the Illinois Medical District and the University of Illinois-Chicago’s east campus, Little Italy is a historic neighborhood located on Chicago’s Near West Side.

Located two miles west of the Loop, the Near West Side is one of 77 defined community areas that make up the city of Chicago. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Near West Side was divided predominately along ethnic lines, with distinct neighborhoods reflecting the nationality of those who inhabited it. However, in the mid-20th century, the area became less and less residential, as expressways and the University of Illinois at Chicago took up large parts of what was previously housing. In recent years, redevelopment and renovation has led to a rebirth in the Near West Side, making the area one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in the city.

The average sales price of a single-family home in the Little Italy neighborhood in 2014 was $508,300.

Little Italy is served by the Chicago Public School system, which offers public education to children from grades K-12. The I-290 and I-90 expressways are conveniently located on the Near West Side, providing easy transportation to the city and beyond. The CTA operates the Blue, Green and Pink 'L' lines, as well as many CTA bus routes. Metra and Amtrak service is easily accessible at Ogilvie and Union Stations, providing service throughout the city and suburbs, as well as across the country.

Although Italian communities have inhabited the area, there has never been a dominant Italian presence in the neighborhood, as the name would suggest. However, there are a number of Italian-American landmarks in the area, including: the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame, the Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii, and Taylor Street, world-famous for its food offerings. One of the most popular restaurants along Taylor Street is Al’s Beef, a Chicago staple since 1938.
