University Village

Community Area: Near West Side

Situated just 5 minutes from the Loop, University Village borders the University of Illinois at Chicago campus, the Illinois Medical District, and the world-famous Maxwell street.

Located two miles west of the Loop, the Near West Side is one of 77 defined community areas that make up the city of Chicago. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Near West Side was divided predominately along ethnic lines, with distinct neighborhoods reflecting the nationality of those who inhabited it. However, in the mid-20th century, the area became less and less residential, as expressways and the University of Illinois at Chicago took up large parts of what was previously housing. In recent years, redevelopment and renovation has led to a rebirth in the Near West Side, making the area one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in the city.

The average sales price of a single-family home in University Village in 2014 was $508,300.

The neighborhood is served by the Chicago Public School system, which offers public education to children from grades K-12. The I-290 and I-90 expressways are conveniently located on the Near West Side, providing easy transportation to the city and beyond. The CTA operates the Blue, Green and Pink 'L' lines, as well as many CTA bus routes. Metra and Amtrak service is easily accessible at Ogilvie and Union Stations, providing service throughout the city and suburbs, as well as across the country.

In the 20th century, Maxwell Street was home to the Maxwell Street Market, which was located at Halsted and 16th Streets. Although the area was home to brick and mortar retail stores, the most iconic feature was the flea market, which formed the largest open-air market in the nation. However, the Market moved in the early 21st century, and currently occupies a place along Des Plaines Street. The neighborhood is also known for its Polish sausage sandwiches, known simply as a “Maxwell Street Polish.” Additionally, Maxwell Street is credited as the birthplace of Chicago Blues, and its influences can still be felt to this very day.
